Re:Nylon
Prada has always employed nylon as a main material. The debut of the brand's '84 collection of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line won the world's attention, and Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her eponymous label as well as Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has redesigned its iconic nylon bags into eco-friendly recycled nylon fabrics. The new collection features six classic styles - one belt bag (pictured) and a shoulder bag (pictured) as well as bags for totes (pictured), a duffle bag (pictured) and two backpacks made of recycled ECONYL fabrics made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.
The material that is recycled is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil which is a textile yarn producer in Italy that makes Econyl fabric from regenerated nylon waste. This fabric can be reused many times without losing its quality. It's part of a wider initiative to transition from virgin nylon to re:Nylon throughout the entire Prada portfolio in 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. The collection includes six new handbags made of Re:Nylon and a pair of ECONYL shoes and boots, and a line of apparel made of the same material.
To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to produce a series of videos called "What We Carry" that exposes the cutting-edge technology which is used to make Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.
The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's move to re-Nylon is their biggest reduction in virgin nylon so far. It will save 70 000 barrels of crude oil every year. Furthermore, prada handbag pink will cut down on the company's carbon emissions by 57,000 tons. It's the latest sustainability effort by the label, which just went fur-free in its clothes and accessories, a move that was lauded by animal rights activists and environmentalists alike.
